hi there
you should think about getting a bigger tank with your idea
i have had ok success with 1 discus per 10 gallons, but ive started up a 300 litre(80 gallon) planted tank with 4 discus and 15 cardinals and every thing is perfect so try and get a 250 litre + tank for 4 discus ann a couple of tetras and it will be worth it,trust me my discus colors have never been brighter

hi rick, i kept some heckels for a while, after my first lot of asian fish, the water where i am in swansea is very soft, kh and gh out of the tap are 0, but ph is 7, the wilds found the water to their liking and never had to try and alter it, so if where you live you have a low kh reading you may well get away with just hma, if not then r.o. might be the only way, as long as you can cater for them and ajust to their needs a tank full of wilds and bogwood, sand base ,is spectacular

in a planted tank, i'd have thought the feeding regime would be the more important than overstocking, feeding heavily with beefheart will cause no end of problems with the water quality, but flake and granule not so bad ,cause of the other inhabitants to clear up, i think you can get away with stocking a few more than usual if you keep on top of maintainance, as they do at stendkers.

I had a really bad experience with an online dealer a while back that I want to share with you, hopefully this will help you to avoid similar misfortune. Having recently got back into fish keeping my wife and I decided that Discus were the fish for us. Like many we read up just about everything we could find on Discus husbandry until we had enough information to feel confident about giving it a stab. We had also prepared our main tank for them and secured the loan of a quarantine tank. Pretty standard stuff I think, I guess most will follow a similar pattern.

Now sometime in in the New year I contacted Tom (rebel) about buying fish, tactfully he recommended Mark, at the time both sponsors were called Mark; one of which was Mark of Midlands Discus (now Regal Discus). Now this is where I made my mistake. At the same time I was looking at ebay and came across a seller who I mistook for Midlands Discus. I contacted this seller through ebay and received a reply very quickly with a surprisingly low price list from which I ordered 6 fish of 3 - 4 inches, all very normal I would imagine. Now this is where things start going wrong.
After a couple of weeks early on a Friday morning I received an email from the seller asking"are you able to take delivery on Saturday". At this point I was unsure if he meant the next day or the week after so I replied asking which I received no reply. By late afternoon I called the seller to ask which and he told me it was the next day, to which I replied yes no problem tomorrow but I wouldn't be in on the Sunday.

Saturday arrived and we stayed in anxiously waiting the arrival of the fish, by 6pm nothing had been heard from either the seller or the courier. Now I was expecting a normal courier who works until 5pm at the latest and had given up on getting a delivery. Just after 6pm I emailed the seller asking to cancel the order as I wouldn't be in the next day as it was my Aunt's funeral. I instantly got a somewhat nasty reply to the email and a telephone call. He stated that the fish had left him in Birmingham at 8am that morning on route to Aberdeen with 30 drops between there and me in north Wales and that the courier should be with us late that night. I explained that if that was the case then please disregard the email and we would accept the delivery and would wait up for him until 11pm. I also said we would wait at home before leaving until 10am the next day and would not be back before 6pm at the earliest. He also said that he had tried to email me but his email was not working, strange how it managed to work to reply to me!

10am the next day arrived and went so we left for Yorkshire and returned home just before 6pm. Now about 6:30 we had a phone call from the courier asking where we lived, eventually he found us on that freezing cold January night in a small van with no windscreen and no bonnet! The fish were delivered, the courier said he had checked the temperature and it was a bit cool but the fish were fine but had to dash as he had another drop some 3 hours away from us. There had been no contact at any other time from either the courier or the seller to let us know what was happening.

On putting the bags in the tank to warm up we saw that the fish were in a bad way, one was lying on its side with no movement whatsoever apparently dead. The others were not quite so bad but still in distress. At this point we checked the water temperature in the bags, 15C! Thankfully that fish wasn't dead but it was over 7 weeks before that fish recovered enough to be reunited with his tankmates. Oh and those 3 - 4 inch fish we ordered? turned out to all be less than 2 1/2 the sick one measured 4cm!

A bit of a whinge you might think, mostly yes but what kind of dealer would promise you a Saturday delivery and then send the fish out on what would have been a 16 hour journey if there were no other stops at all let alone 30 in the middle of the worst winter we've had for 30 years? There was no way those fish could ever have been with me on the day promised, he sent them out knowing I wouldn't be in on the Sunday, what kind of dealer would do that? Certainly one whose motivation is more likely to be driven by profit than the welfare of his fish.

Take it from me if you want to buy Discus and you're new to discus keeping buy them from one of the sponsors of a forum, be it this forum or one other the others. Certainly the sponsors on this forum are foremostly Discus enthusiasts first and businessmen second. Either way buy from a reputable breeder/dealer, you will save yourself a world of pain and expense if you do. If your not sure of the contact details or the authenticity of the dealer out of the forum then contact them directly from here by PM. Basically it's up to you who you buy from but paying 20% more for good quality fish from a quality source will save you big time in time, effort, worry and hard earned cash.

Hi, Ron. Increase the vitamins in the diet and hardness of the water slightly. Additioal water changes may help but I dont know how may you are doing now. You could also add potasioum permanganate to the tank water, a few drops to raise the redox potential, this has the same effect as adding ozone, but not at the same time as any other treatment.

Quite right Mark, getting your fish from the right source is 90% of getting the whole thing right, there is no such thing as good cheap fish (there may be some exceptions occasionally) but there are good value fish for just a bit more from reputable breeders like yourself.

Nice tank by the way, is that Rotala Macarranda in there? amazing pearling on that Ricca, do you still use CO2 in your planted tanks? I've just cut it out of mine to have a stab at low tech.

Thank you for your reply, the fish in question is about 3.5 inches , we introduced 7 al at the same time all more or less the same size about 3 months ago and this is one of them.
i am beginning to think that it may be constipation as this fish had a very bloatytummy and was swimming in an effort or way to keep his place in the water a couple of months back after a few hours he recovered and has been wel since.
Because it looks the same i am asumeign it is the same as in the past but maybe its not?
Yes i take on board what your saying about parasites as due to lifestyle a UV will only get free swimmers. the older pair were wormed when the yhad a smaller tank to themselves but ive put off worming this tank as there seems so many snails and if the wormer kills them i might have a problem as its big and well planted.
Right now he looks fine and has been enjoying bloodworm, so fingers crossed, i just get a guilt trip tho when thier not good and i dont know why

thank you again for your help and you too have a great weekend , we are probably going out on the motorbike

Hi again Simon,
Welcome to DFK,
Your tank should make for a nice display!
As you have reef experience these pointers may be beneficial and influence your decision on going for a constant water change;
Check you Norfolk tap water for nitrate and phosphate. If you go the constant water change route, you may wish to
extend your HMA filter with a double pod containing refillable cartridges with nitrate resin and a phosphate
remover. Otherwise you now what the outcome will be!

If you are using a pump to send water to waste, consider drilling the sump for a Marley pipe 22mm waste, at a low

enough point so water overflows to waste and loose the pump to save eleci.

Constant water changes are great in a highly stocked dealers environment where the system is capable of coping with a sudden influx of a couple of hundred fish, but a little OTT in a display tank, especially with a sump of your proportions, possibly a much bigger sump than most dealers! It seems all the largest sumps are in Norfolk!

In a constant water change system, beneficial bacteria within the sump media may be negligable as nutrients are
constantly exported to waste in an amount depending on the water volume being exported. Watch for the ammonia spike

if you decide to shut in when the eleci meter starts spinning in the winter!

If it was mine, I would ditch the constant water change and fill that huge sump with alfragrog, sintered glass etc with a few coarse sponges as futher mechanical pre filtration for a trouble free and cost effective Discus fish keeping experience.

As always, fish waste, detritus and uneaten food exported mechanically on a regular basis via screens, filter socks
etc will make for better long term water quality before entering the sump and hence the nitrogen cycle.

Creating the ultimate Discus environment is well within you capabilities with such a system. I would stock the plants, corrys and tetras first to protect your main investment. Choose plants that will thrive in both your hard water and the Discus temperature. To finish it off you would need the ultimate fish, some stunning Stendker Discus, which will thrive in your Norfolk hard water through the HMA filter. Unfortunately this would mean jumping in the jam jar and a visit to Devotedly Discus as I don't think there is currently a Stendker dealer in Norfolk?

Hi guys, this is my first post and hope its the first of many. I am based in the North West and hope to stock my new tank (6') in the next 4-5 weeks. I am about 3 weeks into the process so am now looking for a local supplier where I can buy my first ever discus, probably x6 to start with. I like the more natural colour and marking although I am open to options at this stage. Can anyone recommend a retailer or an individual?

Many thanks Alex

Hi Mr Brain,
If you have been successful in keeping a planted tank for several years, keep to your proven method of substrate CO2 (ph controller recommended) and lighting.

On the filtration side, choose an external canister filter rated for slightly more than your tank volume and tap back the flow slightly to make it more in favour of the Discus and plants.

The increased media capacity of the filter will help to harbour the beneficial bacteria responsible for processing the waste of potential large cichlids.

Choose tetras carfully, neons, cardinals etc make wonderfull dither fish and aid confidence in the Discus, although avoid potential fin nippers like serpae tetras.

Husbandry in a heavily planted tank should be second to none. Removing fish waste and uneaten food from in amongst the plants on a regular basis will aid long term water quality and remove organics at source easing the load on the filtration.

Why not add a school of corrydoras to aid in the clean up campaign?

Welcome to the forum and please post pics of your set up soon!

Hi Neil.
Many apologies. It is not uncommon for adult discus fish to not commence feeding for up to three months after being moved, especially after being imported.
Discus fish imported from far away countries are subject to far more shipping intolerance, especially ammonia production in the shipping bag which leads to possible "ammonia burn" often most visuable on the fin extremities (often mistaken for fin rot), though less easily to be noticed on the gills and internal organs.
Always visit a dealer that cares more about the fish and customer aftercare than an instant turnaround...
Hi Mollie!
Silica sand around 3mm works well in a Discus tank; if you can find it from your local fish store? Animal House used to stock the 3mm silica sand.

Silica sand won't compact like the finer grades of sand. Finer sands are notorious for compacting and then hosting anaerobic bacteria.

Disturbing the compacted layers, that are normally black in colour, can ultimately lead to the death of the aquarium unhabitants when the anearobic bacteria are exposed to the oxygen in the water column.

The silica sand (not to be confused with silicates) is also coarse enough not to harbour uneaten food particles in amongst the grains, quite unlike the larger sizes of gravel which may lead to a deterioration in water quality from uneaten food.

Aqua-calc.com has a sand / gravel calculator

Welcome to the forum Mollie!

Hi Emily,
The thing i would do is change the surroundings in the tank this can prevent territoriale area's,but there will always be one fish dominant.

Hi and welcome to discus keeping, I'm pretty new to it too just 2 months in but fingers crossed still smiling. I can't offer you any advice other than lots of water changes and tank cleaning to keep your water pristine and buy your discus from a reputable dealer/breeder such as the sponsors on any of these discus forums. I know there are "some" attractive looking deals on ebay but there are no such things as cheap good discus, they make all sorts of promises but don't believe it. Good fish from a good dealer and your 90% there!

This is very difficult to sort.

IME rarely do fish recover, adding Epsom salts to the water (table spoon per 10gallons) will clear any internal blockage the fish may have.
If this dose not work the chances are that something is affecting the fishes swim bladder, it could be fluid on the internal organs, which is not treatable as far as I know.
Fish I have had that have done this have either died quite quickly or if just left alone ( up to three weeks on occasion) recovered as if nothing has ever been wrong.

It is a tough shout, but personally I would do the Epsom salts, then nothing and see what happens.

I doubt if you need CO2 with just 4 plants, java fern will certainly be more than happy without it. Don't bother with the home brew set ups either, they aren't consistent with their output and your ph will be all over the place.

Hi Drew,
You will encounter lots of views on this subject but in my own experience i would definately set yourself a quaritine tank up,this is the only safe way to protect your already well fish. Most of the fish coming into this country are not quarintined for a sufficent period of time, and given that they have all come from diffrent breeders they have been cross contaminated before they arrive,So the recipe for disaster has already begun. You need to check when the fish you purchased arrive in the country and that they have been quarantined for sufficent time treated and have a clean bill of health.Even so you still need to quarantine yourself in order to allow the fish to acclimjtise to your water parameters before allowing them with your pevious stock. The only fish i know off
are german european stock which are bred from one hatchery. But even still i quarantine...!
Better Safe Than Sorry
Tom

Had to make a decision with the tank makers so I opted to have the hole centre 1.5" above the high centre baffle. I suspect that might be a little low but if it is I can use an elbow fitting to raise it to whatever level I need. I'm opting for standard 21.5mm overflow pipe as it has to run through our hall and I would get my bottom kicked if I used bigger

Are you adding ammonia now? If there is no livestock you need to add ammonia to get the bacteria in the filter going.

Plants, something I have half a grip on, Hydrophilia Polysperma would be fine without CO2 it will grow quite nicely but with CO2 it will take off so to speak, Amazon swords, Crypt Wenditi (most of the crypts really), Echinodorus tennelus, cabomba should all do well. A little bit of liquid carbon will help if you have a lot of light light.
Things like the Rotalas and Ludwigas need loads of light and CO2 so they don't have a chance
Hi Guys,

New to this site and kept tropical fish for years but now ,Keeping my first group of Discus EVER, and so far so good, however i hear people talking about bullying and pairing off which i presume is when they start to breed.
They all seem to get on well with each other, the occasional chase during feeding but i guess thats just natural, and i havn't yet experienced any bullying, however my smallest red turq still has the black bars down its body.why do you think this is?
Could anyone give me advice about what age/ size they start to pair off and also types of behaviour to look for during this. At the moment they are all around 4" with my red turq at 3".

Thanks for your time.

Some possible solutions to this are
1 Add 3 more fish to make a shoal of 6
2 move the decor in the tank around to break the territorial behaviour.
